A portrait experience shaped by presence and quiet strength.
Throughout the year, I photograph a smal number of women in my home studio space – creating moments to pause that are rarely claimed. These portraits explore composure, resilience, and the subtle power of being fully present.
Each session is unhurried, allowing presence and subtle strength to emerge naturally. These portraits explore the small gestures, fleeting expressions, and gentle stillness that reveal who we are when the world slows down.
This work is inspired by the women who have gone before me — a lineage of resilience, care, and quiet courage. It honours the moments often unseen, giving them space to exist and be witnessed.
Through this series, I aim to create portraits that feel intimate, considered, and deeply personal — images that hold both the sitter and the viewer in reflection.

REFLECTIONS
“Sue made the session so easy and comfortable. Her friendly presence drew me into conversation, and I felt completely at ease — which shows in the portraits themselves.”
Michele, Wollongong.
“I came to the session to be brave — having my photo taken is something I usually avoid, especially as I’ve gotten older. But Sue made me feel comfortable straight away. We chatted easily, and before I knew it the nerves had faded. When she counted ‘3…2…1’ I still wondered what on earth I was doing — but I’m really glad I did it!”
Jacqui, Wollongong.
When I arrived for the photoshoot, I felt quite nervous and a bit vulnerable. Being in front of a camera made me feel exposed, and I wasn’t completely sure how to be myself in that kind of setting.
As the session went on, though, something shifted. Sue created an environment that felt safe and supportive, and I slowly started to let my guard down. I began to feel more comfortable, more present, and more like myself. It stopped feeling like I was being “photographed” and more like I was being seen.
By the time I left, I felt lighter — and honestly, a little proud. I walked away with a sense of confidence I didn’t have when I first arrived. It felt like I had pushed through that initial discomfort and found something stronger underneath it.
The experience was meaningful because Sue allowed me to connect with myself in a way I didn’t expect. It wasn’t just about taking photos — it was about letting myself be vulnerable and accepting that version of me.
Now, the portraits mean something deeper. They’re not just images, but a reflection of a moment where I chose to show up, even when it felt uncomfortable. They remind me of growth, self-acceptance, and the quiet confidence that came from allowing myself to be seen. Thank you, Sue.
Jes, Wollongong.
